Amazing grace how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I'm found
Was blind, but now I see
Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed
The Lord has promised good to me
His Word my hope secures
He will my Shield and Portion be
As long as life endures
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow
The sun forbear to shine
But God who called me here below
Will be forever mine, will be forever mine
You are forever mine
My chains are gone, I've been set free
My God, my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood His mercy reigns
Amazing Grace is one of the most sung hymns ever. But do we really comprehend its message? Let's take a look at it verse by verse.
Verse 1: God's grace abounds, even on those who don't acknowledge or follow Him. Every day of our lives are given to us through His grace. In fact, every breath we take is by His grace. We are all sinners and none of us really deserve His grace. But His love for us overrides what we truly deserve. We must realize He has the ability to take us all out in the blink of an eye, but His grace allows us to continue.
We are found and our 'blindness' removed when we finally realize it is by His grace only that we live. Our hearts become so thankful for the grace He extends to us and the blessings He has bestowed on us. All that we have comes from Him. A person can receive only what is given them from heaven - John 3:27.
Verse 2: When we begin to love God through faith, acknowledging His grace, we learn to fear Him. However, this fear is not from anxious concern or awareness of danger. The fear we have for God is a specific sense of respect, awe, and submission. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love - 1 John 4:18. God's love for us is perfect. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding - Proverbs 9:10. Get wisdom. Though it costs all you have, get understanding - Proverbs 4:7. The best thing you can do for yourself is fill yourself up with God's wisdom and understanding.
Verse 3: The Word of God is chock full of promises. The only thing we have to do is receive them and believe them by faith. All His promises are good and fill us with hope. Throughout your life, in all circumstances, He is your Shield and Protector. Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him - Proverbs 30:5.
There are stipulations, though, to His being your Shield and Protector. You must do your part in making Him your constant companion. Seek His face and strive to live as He would have you to do. His Son, Jesus, teaches how to do this. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised - Hebrews 10:36. My shield is God Most High, who saves the upright in heart - Psalm 7:10.
Verse 4: This old earth is not going to last forever, It doesn't take a great scientist to figure this out. Just take a look at the weather patterns, how the storms are increasing and causing more and more loss and devastation. Look at the direction our country's morality is going, so against God and His laws. How long do you think He will let this go on? God is all we really have and the sooner we realize this, the better off we will be. Please realize everything you can see and everything you can tough is temporary, but God is forever yours. So keep your focus always on Him.
Chorus: He will take away the chains that bind you; fear, hopelessness, pain, worry, sickness, aging, addiction, weakness. God will ransom you and flood you with His mercy, His unending love, and His Amazing Grace!
