How did we get here?
All castaway on a lonely shore
I can see in your eyes, dear
It's hard to take for a moment more
We've got to
Burn the ships, cut the ties
Send a flare into the night
Say a prayer, turn the tide
Dry your tears and wave goodbye
Step into a new day
We can rise up from the dust and walk away
We can dance upon our heartache, yeah
So light a match, leave the past, burn the ships
And don't you look back
Don't let it arrest you
This fear is fear of fallin' again
And if you need a refuge
I will be right here until the end
Oh, it's time to
So long to shame, walk through the sorrow
Out of the fire into tomorrow
So flush the pills, face the fear
Feel the wave disappear
We're comin' clear, we're born again
Our hopeful lungs can breathe again
Oh, we can breathe again
'Burn the ships' is a concept in which we leave ourselves no other option in regards to something we want to achieve. In the spiritual life, it is a call to freedom from the ties of sin that keep us bound so we can move forward in Jesus.
As the song says, most of us will, sometime in our life, get to a point where we will wonder 'just how did I get here?' This is a place of pure loneliness and heartache where we feel as if we can't take another moment more. What to do? Send a flare up to Jesus for help. We need to make it our mission to have a close relationship with Him. We need to burn the ships and cut the ties so we have no way to return to our old way of life. Then we pray, turn the tide, dry our tears, and wave goodbye. In doing this, we will step into a new day. "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" - 2 Corinthians 5:17. We will rise up out of the dust of our old life and be able to walk away. "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead." - Philippians 3:13.
Through the power of Jesus, we will be able to walk right through our sorrows and dance upon our heartaches. We will become able to face the fear of ridding ourselves of all the pills of sin that we have been swallowing, and feel the heavy waves of the old life disappear. Our eyes begin to see everything clearer, while our lungs can, once again, breathe in hope. All we have to do is light a match, burn the ships, and not look back.
When fear of returning to our old life rears its ugly head, we don't let it stop us or deter us from our mission. We will learn that Jesus is always with us and will never leave us. "Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." - Matthew 28:20. He is our refuge. "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." - Psalm 46:1. With Him by our side we will have all the power we need to continue on.
Are your ships still afloat?
Do you need a match?
