Verse 1:
Out of the depths of silent night
Immanuel, come hear our cry
Our grief is strong, our burdens great
The night is long and hope is faint
You came to set the captives free
A Morning Star of joy and peace
Why does this darkness feel so deep?
Why can't our weary spirits see?
Chorus:
Glory, glory, glory in the darkest place
Glory, glory, glory let Your mercy reign
Verse 2:
Out of the depths of silent night
A Savior born, a mother's sigh
The darkness trembled at this Star
A beam of hope for troubled hearts
You came to make Your blessings known
And bear our curse of death alone
You came to share our suffering
So in our sorrow we could sing
The definition of 'glory' is: 'praise, honor, or distinction extended by common consent; worshipful praise, honor, and thanksgiving; a state of gratification; a height of prosperity.' The darkest place would be symbolic of the pain we experience in our lives. Pain of an illness or terminal disease. Pain of losing a loved one to death. Pain of being treated bad by others, maybe even our family members. Pain of losing a job and experiencing financial concerns. Pain of rejection for being a follower of Jesus. Our griefs are strong and our burdens are great. The darkness of our nights is long and our hope is very faint. Can we actually 'glory' in these times? Can we praise God and give Him honor, continuing in prosperity and thanksgiving when we find ourselves in a dark place? Is it really possible for us to be able to do this? Yes, but.....
Only through Jesus. He came to set the captives free. Captives held in darkness so deep that our weary souls can't see the joy and peace that our praise and worship to Him, the Morning Star, will bring. The depths of the darkness trembled the night He was born, for He was a beam of hope for troubled hearts. He came to make His blessings known, while bearing alone OUR curse of death. He came down from heaven in human form so He could share in our sufferings, making it possible for us to sing. Sing in the midst of all our darkest places. With Him by our side, there are no dark places that can hold us captive....not even death.
"O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel." - Psalm 22:3. Yes, God inhabits the praises of His people, especially the praises that come out of the depths of our darkness, the times when we, in our humanity, find it so hard to do. Oh, what a beautiful and precious gift we have been given! To be able to....
Glory in the darkest place!!
So, are you giving Him glory? Even in the dark?
