Verse 1:
That Bible by the bed ain't a coaster no more
It's still got some rings from the bottles before
But that red letter mercy put an end to my thirsty
That Bible by the bed ain't a coaster no more
Verse 2:
Well, I told my old man that I loved him today
And he said it back before he drove away
Been stubborn like my father
We were oil and water
But I told my old man that I loved him today
Chorus:
I guess that's what happens when He chases you down
Everything's different, there's a new me in town
I don't wake up angry at the mirror on the wall
So, if you miss the old me
Well, that's Jesus' fault
Verse 3:
Yeah, Sundays don't make me feel sad like they did
She don't have to drag me like she does our kids
And I still got some questions, but I'm counting my blessings
Yeah, Sundays don't make me feel sad like they did
This song is all about the changes that come upon someone's life after they realize exactly who Jesus is. Like so many people, this man had set aside the Word of God, even using it as a coaster for his bottles of the wrong kind of spirit. "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit." - Ephesians 5:18. But once he began reading the letters in red, which are the words of Jesus, he began to change. Apparently, the relationship he had with his Dad wasn't all that good, as we know that oil and water definitely do not mix. But the words of Jesus, as they will surely do, changed something in his heart, even to the point of him professing his love for his Dad, to which his Dad responded back in the same way. "Wisdom's instruction is to fear the Lord, and humility comes before honor." - Proverbs 15:33. Yes, Jesus can mend relationships.
He then goes on to tell of how he used to view Sunday mornings....with sadness. Was it a sadness of him knowing full well where he should be, but deciding to stay home instead? Maybe it was a sadness of how he had spent the night before, waking up to a pounding headache. It doesn't say specifically. But it does say that his view of this particular day of the week had changed. He was now attending church with his wife and kids. Like many of us, he still had some questions, but he was counting his blessings instead of, maybe, taking everything for granted. "Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him." - Psalm 34:8. Yes, Jesus can change your priorities and how you view your life.
This is only a snippet of what the words of Jesus can do in a person's life. Whether we realize it or not, He is chasing us down....each and every one of us. His desire is to make these types of changes in our lives, so that everything is new and different. When we look at ourselves in the mirror, we will find a totally different person looking back. "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here." - 2 Corinthians 5:17. Our friends begin to recognize us as someone they don't even know anymore. They start asking us what happened to the person we used to be, to which we can now answer....
If you miss the old me
Well, that's Jesus' fault!
