Hold it all together
Everybody needs you strong
But life hits you out of nowhere
And barely leaves you holding on
And when you're tired of fighting
Chained by your control
There's freedom in surrender
Lay it down and let it go
So when you're on your knees and answers seem so far away
You're not alone, stop holding on and just be held
Your world's not falling apart, it's falling into place
I'm on the throne, stop holding on and just be held
Just be held, just be held
If your eyes are on the storm
You'll wonder if I love you still
But if your eyes are on the cross
You'll know I always have and I always will
And not a tear is wasted
In time, you'll understand
I'm painting beauty with the ashes
Your life is in My hands
Lift your hands, lift your eyes
In the storm is where you'll find Me
And where you are, I'll hold your heart
I'll hold your heart
Come to Me, find your rest
In the arms of the God who won't let go
We all have responsibilities in this life that we feel can only be done by us. That if we're not there, things won't get done and those in our care won't get cared for. This is what the song is talking about when it refers to 'chains of control.' In believing we need to stay strong for those around us, we have actually chained ourselves to this idea of control. Then something happens that slams us to the floor. We hit a brick wall with no way to break through it....a life moment that causes everything to go on hold. We have no choice but to stop and depend on others for help. In our humanity, these things happen to all of us. Times when we are forced to give up our chains of control. Times when we are forced to depend on others for the things that we thought could only be done by us.
However difficult it may be to understand, these terrible times do have a purpose....a spiritual purpose. It is only through the Lord that we are able to recognize, accept, and learn from them. He wants us to stop fighting these chains of our control and surrender our lives to Him...to His control...a control that has no chains. This is where we will find true freedom. In some of these times of being slammed to the floor, we can see no way out....no answers to our questions....no light at the end of our tunnel. But again, however difficult it may be to understand, these are the times that are used by God to bring about our good. We may not think so, as we, in our humanity, are unable to see anything good in these situations. But this is where our ability to let God be God in our lives is manifested. This is where the faith in Him that we have come to know grows in leaps and bounds. These are the times in which we learn to stop holding on and to just be held. Held by the One that we know is on the throne. Held by the One to whom we have given control of our lives.
Recently, I experienced one of these brick walls where I was literally slammed to the floor. All my chains of control fell off as I was forced to depend on those that were around me. Many tests were run, one being an MRI where I was slid into a very loud, pounding tube. I was given earphones to deaden the noise with my choice of music which was, of course, contemporary Christian. This song, Just Be Held, played into my ears during this time. It was a great, spiritual message for me, one that I definitely needed to hear.
"He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." - Philippians 1:6. Since I had already surrendered my life to the Lord, all my fear was gone. I was not anxious about the outcome because I knew I was being held. Those around me, my family, the nurses, the doctors, were all doing what they needed to do to the best of their ability, but ultimately, I was not in their hands. I was being held in the hands of the Lord. I was being held in His hands before any of this took place, in the midst of all of it, and after it was all over. My hands and my eyes were lifted up to the One who will never let go. This is true freedom. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." - Philippians 4:6-7.
During our lives we will shed a lot of tears, and not one of them is wasted. He sees them all. He feels them all. If we give our lives to Him, placing our faith and trust in Him, He will paint into glorious beauty the parts of our lives that look to us to be piles of ashes. What a mighty God we serve!
So, are you being held?
